I am organising a Czech language course. The recent television news footage is both terrifying and agitating. We are desperate to help the suffering Ukraine. Men bravely defend their invaded homeland against the aggressors and women with children flee abroad. This includes the Czech Republic.
How can I help refugees if I cannot accommodate them and I am even unable to provide material help or contribute to a humanitarian fund-raising campaign because of my low income?
"I was thinking about what to offer, what I can do, and a language course came out of it," said Stanislava Kučerová, a Czech Language teacher at the Bishop Grammar School in Hradec Králové. She approached the local Diocesan Charity with her idea. There was a very rapid transition from ideas to action. The Caritas Integration Centre for Foreigners has been running similar courses for years and it also has volunteers. Ms Kučerová provided access to the school, classroom and student volunteers.
